Liftcommissie

Letter groote: Decrease font Enlarge font

    Hitchhiking competition Utrecht to Strasbourg
On the 24th of April, Strasbourg had to get ready for an invasion of Dutch people hitchhiking in great haste. That day, the competition began between 9 couples to get from Utrecht to Strasbourg first to claim the prize (and of course, hanging around in the sun while the others were still struggling). After leaving several other couples behind us, waving, our good hopes sprang to life to win. After a benevolent truck driver who took us after 3 seconds of waiting, and two Dutch guys on their way to Dortmund to buy a new car on their ‘network Friday’, we got into Germany well before noon. Easily enough for us, a Dutch couple took us further beyond Karlsruhe, saving us the German language lessons. But a hitchhiking trip to France can’t be complete without hitchhiking with a Frenchman and the first Frenchman took us right to Strasbourg central station!

Such a sight! Place Kleber was a good relaxing spot for café. Believing for two hours that we had won the competition, the celebration was cut short when we came upon the two guys that already arrived at 3 p.m. noooo. Oh well, it’s the journey, not the destination that matters. The rest of the night was used up finding the hostel and trying to guide others towards it. The Frenchman in the restaurant refuge we found for having diner appeared to have lived in Delft for some time and was a good host. Half of the people spent the evening with Adeline and were lodged in her hospitable apartment.

It was time to have a great time in Strasbourg and Adeline showed us around well. We visited the museum of modern art, wandered through town and tasted tarte flambée with homebrewed amber beer. A hearty meal, especially with the happy hour going on to keep the table full. Afterwards a stroll through la Petite France gave a nice impression of the beautiful building style. Club Java was the place for a party, and they even gave us free wodka because we’re AEGEEans :)

Sunday was departure day already and everyone went hitchhiking again to go home. Some (yours truly included) were already in Utrecht by 6 p.m. and even a limo was acquired by one couple to go home in style. Of course, not everything went smoothly. One couple arrived on the morning the day after by train and spent a lot of time sleeping on station benches. Safe to say: a weekend to remember!! Thanks to AEGEE-Strasbourg and especially Adeline for the good care!
