Spring Agora 2000
Van 4 t/m 7 mei 2000 had AEGEE-Utrecht de eer de gastheer/vrouw te zijn van de Spring Agora. Dit is één van de mooiste events in Utrecht van de afgelopen jaren. Spring Agora 2000, Utrecht, the Netherlands
On 4 – 7 May, 2000 General Assembly of AEGEE – traditional Agora took place in beautiful town Utrecht, Holland. At that time a delegation of AEGEE-Minsk numbered 8 members. In general, in Utrecht were about 800 students – members of AEGEE – from different university towns in Europe. The main part of the students was from Holland, Germany, Poland, the Ukraine, Italy, but there were representatives, for example, from Astrakhan and Helsinki too. All the members were assembled at Agora to discuss the future projects of AEGEE like the conference “The Europe of 15+” or “Borderless Europe Rally” in Brussels under the patronage of Nicole Fontaine, President of the European Parliament, when young men from different countries will be united in teams (every team will have 4 members) to overcome together frontiers and borders among different people during the European Tour by bicycles from Prague to Brussels; or “Peace Summit”, that will take place on 12 – 27 August, 2000 in Athens and Ankara. All these events were discussed during the plenty of seminars. (You can read about these events on pages 6 and 7). Besides presentations of the projects, AEGEE-members participated in discussions concerning the future of their organization, problems of fund-raising and collaboration in regions, educational programs ERASMUS – SOCRATES. They adopted Yearplan 2001 “Enlargement of the European Union”, so AEGEE will keep within the bounds of this plan next year. But the most important thing of the Forum was, of course, election of new Comité Directeur of AEGEE-Europe. First of all, a majority of delegates approved Activity Report - the results of the work of the previous AEGEE-Commissions and Working Groups and Moral Report – a return of each Director, and thanked them for their good work. A new, the 22 AEGEE-President, became Oana Maylatesku, a twenty-five years old student from Romania. Oana had already worked in Comité Directeur as a Secretary, and now she should represent AEGEE in international arena. Kalin Hajduk, who was elected responsible for Network, is Romanian too. It should be noted, that responsible for relations in our region (Belarus, Russia, the Ukraine, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia) is president of AEGEE-Lviv Ivan Petrenka, and his assistant in this business is Kazjaryna Radzko (AEGEE-Minsk!), which were elected as NetCom and SubNetCom accordingly. Sebastijan Kljusner, a student of Department of Geography from Heidelberg, will now be responsible for European Projects, he has already worked in CD. The Agora was a great success for Poles: 2 girls from AEGEE-Poznan – Agneshka Vilk and Magda Tarshevska - entered CD. Besides that, in the Comité was remained Kshishtaf Shchigelski from Warsaw, who was previously responsible for Internal Education. At present he controls problems of fund-raising in AEGEE. We may consider, that election of PR and Treasure of AEGEE-Europe was a real surprise, because candidates on these posts were found only at the Forum. It is generally known, that success of organization as a whole depends on a good work of command, we should hope, that the activity of the new elected Comité Directeur will be successful. The Agora were closed with presentation of future AEGEE-locals’ conferences and signing new AEGEE-contacts so called “Convention d’Adhesion” (Convention of Consent), that gives the right to give the rank of Contact Antenna and to enlarge AEGEE-Network.

UTRECHT A pounding headache, nausea, smelly clothes, are we forgetting something? These are only some of the side-effects of having a «great» party, and are becoming part of the daily routine of more and more students. This is why the topic dealing with students and alcohol, 99% VOL.- A Loaded Experience, was chosen for the three-day conference held by AEGEE- Utrecht. The topics included: alcohol and traffic, the influence of alcohol on brain, body and social life, and the alcohol policy in Europe. One of the topics that aroused great interest was on ways to handle a drunk person. One of the tricks that could pre- vent accidents to happen is to take the drivers car keys early in the evening so that they would not insist on driving after having drunk some alcohol. The participants were furthermore briefed on the Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and were informed of the twelve steps involved in their approach to confronting the vice of alcohol. Before the closing of the conference, a discussion on legislative problems was held. After the voting on European policy, it turned out that most of the people were in favour of having some framework of legislation to control the use of alcohol.
This conference was a success because now 150 European students know a bit more on what they are doing when consuming alcohol, says main organizer Fleur van Leeuwen.

Key to Europe '99-'00Fight against Death Penalty
24/1, UTRECHT Three-thousand signatures against the death penalty all collected: this was the result of a campaign carried out by the Human Rights Working Group (HRWG). The initiative started on 24 January 1999, when Else Weijsenfeld, then president of the HRWG, called for participation. «Considering that the year 2000 is going to be the year in which a lot of NGOs will be demanding the abolition of the death penalty in the world, we also decided to gather supporting signatures to present to the UN. Else s successor Alex Zucconi continues: I did not expect such a positive reaction. Some antennae were really involved: AEGEE-Skopje alone gathered 800 signatures.
All signatures were presented during a UN meeting in New York, in November 1999. A few months later, Albania, Turkmenistan and Ukraine had abolished the death penalty; whilst Thailand, several states in the USA and Congo have also suspended capital judgments. Of course this action is not yet over. The HRWG, together with AEGEE-Europe, is in the process of sending mails to all the European countries which are still considered not to be respecting human rights», says Alex. So you will hear from us soon!
